Nasar Abadey and SUPERNOVA’s ® musical presentation demonstrates an array of Colors, Textures and Grooves!
They perform music from the threshold of Jazz to beyond space and time, while having an artistic license to express their compositions through traditional African rhythms, bebop, fusion, Afro-Cuban, Afro Brazilian, and free form.The band’s musical inspirations include John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, and Duke Ellington among others.

Musical Ambassadors Nasar Abadey and SUPERNOVA ® continue the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the historic March for Jobs and Freedom. Nasar Abadey, the founder, leader and driving force of SUPERNOVA®, together with Joe Ford, James King, John Williams and Allyn Johnson will share their experiences as jazz musicians during this era and beyond. Joining the discussion is historian, author, educator and newly appointed Chairman of the District of Columbia Commission on African American Affairs, Maurice Jackson. This JAZZforum is a prelude to the concert – Take 5! “Jazz and the Civil Rights Movement” scheduled at the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum on September 19, 2013 Recital Hall (Performing Arts Bldg. 46-West) — FREE & OPEN to the Public.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, Nasar Abadey and SUPERNOVA® perform jazz compositions inspired by the Civil Rights movement, including excerpts from Max Roach’s We Insist!—Freedom Now Suite, as well as works by John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, and Cal Massey.

DC musical treasure, Drummer Nasar Abadey and his band SUPERNOVA® intersect their multi-dimensional and multi-directional Jazz with the sound of the future – KUSH, a band led by his multi-talented son. This celebration of inter-generational American music, builds a nexus between traditional jazz modalities from seasoned musicians with the young lions inserting today’s musical codes which point to future realities.
GENERATIONS Legacy Bands presented the sounds of today and tomorrow, as each band offered its own set of standards and original compositions, then both bands merged for a fantastic finale! The lineup for this performance was drummer Nasar Abadey and SUPERNOVA featuring Joe Ford, Saxophones; James King, Bass; Allyn Johnson, Piano; John Williams, Trumpet; and Jabari Exum, Percussion; with KUSH featuring Kush Abadey on Drums; Arnold Lee, Tenor Saxophone; Michael Bowie, Bass; Eden Ladin Piano.
The ATLAS INTERSECTIONS Arts Festival presented a plethora of music, theater, dance, film and spoken word that offer new ways to see ourselves and to celebrate our community and our world, February 22 – March 10, 2013.

In Person … The Abadey Legacy Show
Speaking of fulfilling promise, the long awaited Generations Legacy Bands show featuring groups led by Nasar Abadey and his son Kush Abadey did that and more at the Atlas, March 2. Master percussionist Nasar Abadey on the drums led his group, with Allyn Johnson, piano, James King, bass, Joe Ford, saxophones, John Williams, trumpet, and Jabari Exum, also on percussion, in the first set, with some tunes from his latest CD, “Diamonds in the Rough,” such as “The Covenant” – a multilayered piece arguably becoming his signature composition.
Then the band, led by drummer Kush Abadey, took over, with percussionist Exum doubling down to shout out some rhythmic rap, and saxophonist Arnold Lee, bassist Michael Bowie, and pianist Eden Ladin providing fine support on often edgy and free but always rhythmic tunes.

Nasar Abadey and SUPERNOVA ® performed with Synchronicity and Divine Order for the first time. It was an awesome concert! (Speaking of Jazz History class, the musical director and pianist for SUPERNOVA and Divine Order, Allyn Johnson was in that very same jazz history class I mentioned above.) Definitely look out for all three groups especially Synchronicity, a group of sisters playing violins and a cello. Also look out for soloist Lori Williams”.
Intersections in Space: SUPERNOVA Meets SYNCHRONICITY, an all-acoustic cast of strings and percussion, along with the voices of DIVINE ORDER meets a classic jazz ensemble in a concert of original compositions revealing surprising connections of musical styles, Musical Director Allyn Johnson.
